The event name explains it all. It was crisp morning about 34 degrees, 26 wind-chill, the sun was popping and it would be a beautiful day. The problem? There was torrential rain most of the night, MUD! The course was on country dirt rods which made for a mud fest. The distance we ran turned out to be just a 15k. After much debate Paula and I decide to we would run the 25k together. I wanted to run the 50k but that would put us back home way too late. As I had to take "The Beast" to the Girl Scout Father Daughter Dance at 530pm. Then we realized, I'm an idiot, that the race didn't start until 9am. Once we started running we were all moving fairly slow. Cheri Sutton and Tasha Parker were there representing Runners In Touch as well. The mud took us down a gear and time just got away. We finished the 15k well after 2 hours and decided to call it a day, all 4 of us. The slow pace had put us behind schedule, since I needed to get home. Poor planning on my part!
The event itself was great! Very low key and welcoming. The race director, Steve, is a former Marine well organized with no frills. That's the way Paula and I like our events. There were about 30 runners most doing the 10k and the rest scattered throughout the 15k, 25k and 50k. The atmosphere could be equated to our local KC event Brew to Brew or any Lou Joline race. The race started with Steve racing his hat and bring it down swiftly to mark the official start. I love it!! No clock, no chip just running. I commented to Paula that this was like something we would put on, in the same vain as out Chain Gang Runs.
Once we were off and running we fell into a nice comfortable slog. Pushing through the mud your feet sometime sinking and becoming engulfed. These spots were frequent though not longer than a 100 yards at a time. The hills; it was literally ONE HILL AFTER ANOTHER. You were either going up or coming down, I don't think we ever had more than a tenth of a mile of flat road. It really was a fun course, hopefully it will workout next year and we will have more time.
The awards were quite unique, a piece of tile with the race patch logo glued on. Priceless!:) If you are looking for a low-key challenging run this is it.
NEVER STOP RUNNING!!
