BOOT CAMP!!?? CROSSFIT, P90X.....

With the New Year upon us I am inundated with "what is the best workout?". I'm sorry to tell you, this will really piss off a lot of loyalist to whatever the newest fad is, there is no "best" workout. The bottom line is it doesn't matter as long as you bust your ass and give your body great nutrition you will be successful at your fitness and health goals.

Now that being said my opinion, for what it's worth, is that some of the programs that are out there are very inventive and fun. I like P90X, it is very tough but you have to be a self motivator to stick with it. If you follow the DVDs and feed your body good whole foods you will get results. The classes, such as CrossFit, are great for camaraderie and friendly competition. Of all the ones I have researched CrossFit is probably the best of the latest craze it is very tough and rewarding. I did watch a video and it was just a little too dramatic for me. Anytime someone tries to equate working out with battle it makes me laugh my ass off. Get over yourself!! Which brings me to the most appalling of the fitness classes "boot camp" . These so called boot camp classes are a joke and should be called what they are, a fitness class. It is a pet peeve of mine, and many other Marines, when civilians play military or equate there life with it. That's right I don't like it when football players use the term "field of battle", they go home after a GAME. Those in battle stay on the field so you and I can maintain our freedom. Now if you are former military and want to push civilians around in the name of fitness so be it. For those of you who get a "personal training" certificate and start a "boot Camp" class, well I have no use for you.

OK, sorry about the rant but that is how I feel and so do a lot of former and current military. The key to meeting your fitness goals is hard work and good nutrition. Actually nutrition is 80% of what will happen to your body. You can do any of the above and get results the first few weeks from the shock to your body. Nutrition is what will bring forth long term changes to your body. You need to make a lifestyle change to change your body. Workout for an hour a day and eat whole foods and you can do it. Yes just an hour a day, unless you are training for something specific such as a tri, ultra, bodybuilding..... You are wasting your time if you train more than an hour. Whole foods! That means nothing artificial, plant based, organic..... I personally also recommend that you use Isagenix. It is a whole SUPERFOOD, I don't go a day without it. Get rid of all the boxed food like substances in your house and buy only fresh fruit and vegetables. If you do eat meat make sure it is feed naturally not grain, corn.... grass. There are more and more organic farms popping up all over.

Health and fitness really is easy, it just takes discipline and a commitment to your body.

Your body is a temple and a gift from GOD.. Are you treating it as one?

  1. Coach Karl, I couldnt help myself here....just my personality! I must pleed my case!! I teach a pretty successful bootcamp class in Liberty. You know me....our kids go to school together.
I understand your position on those of us "civilians" getting in on your territory and calling our fitness classes "bootcamp". My husband was a marine (although I suppose once a marine, always a marine). He is in total support of my Burn Bootcamp class. We civilians call it bootcamp not because we want to mock the dedication to the ones who protect our country, but because we KNOW that the workouts you all go through are tough, body weight related, and build good self esteem. We actually respect the bootcamp style!!!!! I have been asked on several occasions if I was in the military simply because I love push ups, running hills, calastinics, and screaming at my clients to complete that last set comes natural to me. I love my Burn Bootcamp class and it brings a lot of good to those who take it. It is also worthy to be called bootcamp because we do a simple "PFT" every 6 weeks to evaluate our progress! I even break out the Army stadard ratings to compare our fitness level to those in the army...(my husband, the fit marine, does poke fun at that and claims that, "the army is not the most in the world").
I am sorry if I offend you and others, but I feel like I am bringing a great, well rounded fitness program to those women (and a few men) who do not like the tradition aerobics style class that most fitness centers offer.

Have a great day and I am sure I will see you soon! Mendy Shriver
