The past two months Paula and I have been teaching a class relating fitness and nutrition to the Bible and how it relates with Christian life. We are in no way experts on theology, though I do have a secret desire to preach. Maybe it is just a desire to condemn and tell people what to do:) Just kidding, that in no way reflects on our pastor. Pastor Ron, the pastor at The River, has been an inspiration and wonderful teacher in our walk with Christ. His message is Grace through Christ. So the more involved we became with the church we wanted to contribute in some way. So we decided to do what we know. Fitness and Nutrition. The last two years I have taken a real interest in how this relates to my walk with Christ and what the lessons are in the Bible. There are a few so called "experts" on the subject, such as Jordan Ruben and Reverend George Malkmus. Both of whom I respect, they have given me much to think about through their books and websites. If this topic is of interest to you I highly recommend them both as a wealth of information.
So we put this lesson plan together, ok Paula put this lesson plan together, starting with Genesis and working our way through the Bible. I won't get too detailed I will just cover our theories and the reaction we got. As most of you know our family is vegetarian, for many reasons, mostly health. Through my research and self experimentation this is the healthiest way to nourish our bodies and prevent disease. Biblically Genesis 1:29 and the first book of Daniel sum it up best. In the beginning God put Adam and Eve in paradise, in paradise the food source was "every seed-bearing plant" and "every tree that has fruit with seed". That excluded grains since there wasn't much cooking going on back then and grain uncooked tastes awful! Again that is my interpretation. Then we look at Daniel and the story of him and his friends refusing the Kings food, Daniel said " he would not defile himself" with the Kings food. Instead he requested "vegetables and water" after 10 days on this diet Daniel and friends out preformed all the other young men in this little internship for the King. Read it and decide for yourself. Scientifically The China Study and The Gerson Therapy brought the debate to a close for Paula and I. These books are a must read for anyone interested in improving their health and/or prevention or eliminating disease through nutrition. There are other scripture and insights but that really is the core of our belief.
The first couple of weeks we talked about adding more fruits and veggies to their diet. We also talked about the importance of water intake. These recommendations were readily embraced, so we gave them a "challenge" to increase the consumption of these nutritional staples. Which they happily accepted. Then the third week we talked about meat and trying to cut back. You would have thought we were trying to take their first born!! Adding to their diet was ok, taking away was another story.:) Especially MEAT!!! People were twisting scripture to justify eating an extra value meal. Not to that extreme but you get my point. It is like anything else in life, we as a people can justify anything. From eating poorly to murder. You know I'm right, so get that look off your face. No I don't equate the two, the point is if you want to do it you will find a way to make it ok. We had a lively debate, Paula and I accomplished what we set out to do; make people think about their daily nutrition. Our goal wasn't to change their minds, just make them think. I believe people should eat the way they want, I just want them to be educated. Once you have all the information you are free to make your own choices. We still live in a free country.
I must say we put together a wonderful and thought provoking class. I will summarize; if you don't eat what I tell you, you will go to hell:):) We believe that fruits and vegetables are our main source of nutrition. Yes we still use Isagenix and always will. These foods should be eaten in their natural form, raw. Even if you don't want to become a vegetarian and aren't convinced that this is what the Bible teaches I refer you to 1 Corinthians 3:16 & 17, we are GODs Temple. So I ask you are you treating Gods Temple with respect? Think about that the next time you put processed, preservative loaded, artificially loaded food substance into your Temple. Our bodies were designed by God to thrive, if you treat it the way God intended. I referenced The China Study and The Gerson Therapy earlier, these books do not invoke God in anyway. They do make you realize that Genesis 1:29 is the way to live your life. Studies have shown that this way of life will not only prevent disease but has been know to reverse the advancement of numerous diseases.
Final thought: Romans 14! For all us out in the fitness and nutrition world and who are Followers of Jesus, this scripture puts us in our place. I am not here to judge or condemn, rather to minister and help those that need and want my help. Paula and I have decided that this is our path. We are going to minister for Christ through health and nutrition. But without judgment! With love and compassion. we are all children of God and we should respect each others life choices. We educate and let the changes happen when they happen. The bottom line is we will all be judge by God not by man. So unless we advice with love and compassion we should mind our own business. Of course this doesn't apply to politics:):)
GOD BLESS
